Sowing and Growing
Sowing seeds directly during the Fall is a great way to start your echinacea as germination is best when it receives winter cold. Make sure your ground is prepared and situated in a well thought out garden spot. Echinacea can grow in a variety of soils except very heavy and wet. Artificial stratification will greatly enhance germination which can take up to 6 weeks inside. To fill out your patch, let echinacea stand through the winter, dropping its own seed. Cut back any material remaining in the spring to let the sun in.
Harvesting
As a perennial, you don’t harvest aerial parts of the plant until year two and whole plants with their taproot can be harvested in peak bloom in year three. Home uses include teas, foot soaks and herb baths.
